Course Description

  • Prerequisite: CA 122
  • CA majors only

Emphasis on electronic typographic design projects, concept development with exposure to historical and contemporary type issues. Continuation of study of basic type fundamentals from CA 122

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of CA 135, the student will be able to:

  • Recognize the historical and contemporary classification systems of typography.
  • Employ the following steps to achieve quality typographical output:
    • measure text
    • do copy fitting
    • proofread
    • mark-up
    • correct copy
    • select appropriate software
      • OCR
      • wordprocessing
      • page layout
    • prepare for output at a service bureau
  • Use vocabulary specific to typography, computer applications, and hardware.
  • Incorporate meaning, organization, and quality in typographic assignments.
  • Apply the typographic qualities of legibility and readability.
  • Critique type selection and layout on the following terms:
    • message
    • client need
    • use of type
    • design
  • Use type design programs such as Fontographer or Illustrator to manipulate type images.
  • Demonstrate verbal and visual language skills in designing solutions to assigned problems.
  • Produce work that demonstrates the following qualities:
    • attention to detail
    • organization
    • problem solving
    • flexibility in use of verbal and visual language
  • Exhibit improvement in electronic typesetting and other computer tools.
  • Exhibit improvement in traditional hands-on media.
