CA 145 - Graphic Design
Course Description
- Prerequisite: CA 100, 125, 132, 135
- CA majors only
An advanced course in design solutions for various client related needs such as posters, brochures, ublications, symbols and corporate systems. Use of computer and other media skills. Emphasis on ommunication skills to include oral, written and visual presentation.
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of CA 145, the student will be able to:
- Use vocabulary specific to design, printing, and related fields.
- Perform the following steps of the design process at an advanced level:
- investigate client needs
- do marketing research
- define the design problem
- problem solve
- develop an idea or concept
- do thumbnails.
- do roughs
- do comps
- do presentation art
- produce mechanicals
- prepare final art
- Apply the principles of design to assigned projects.
- Use typography or images to communicate in assigned projects.
- Select appropriately from various technical alternatives to achieve effective design solutions.
- Use the following means to implement ideas for production:
- computers
- pre press production houses
- service bureaus
- Designate printing and paper specs.
- Oversee printing and production bids.
- Do quality control.
- Do billing.
- Write technical specifications, project objectives, and reports.
- Do oral presentations.
- Discuss the concepts of experimental play and risk-taking in creative innovation.
- Recognize the investigative requirements for print design applications:
- design systems
- symbol and identity systems
- information design
- publication design
- print design
- book design
- poster design
- package design
- Explain the role of project director in collaboration with the following professionals:
- illustrators
- photographers
- copy writers
- other creative and technical service providers
- Apply historical and contemporary design styles to the creation of contemporary design.
- Produce graphic design samples appropriate for the final graphic design portfolio.
- Organize time and maintain schedules to meet deadlines.
