1. When do the classes start?
Classes for new students begin only in the Fall semester. If you start in the Spring semester, you will be taking your support classes such as Math, English and other general education requirements.
2. Will a degree in carpentry help me get into the Carpenter’s Union?
No. However, once you are accepted into the Union, your degree at HCC will be counted as apprentice hours as you work towards your journey workers license.
3. Is there an advantage to completing the carpentry program at HCC instead of directly entering the Carpenter’s Union?
Classes at HCC will give you the basic skills and knowledge necessary for the construction industry. Taking HCC classes will give you a good foundation of structured and systematic instruction especially if you have no experience in the field. Completing a degree will waive you from having to complete classroom hours equivalent to five classes once you are accepted into the apprenticeship program. You will also start with a 5-10% higher apprenticeship wage.
4. What is the emphasis of the carpentry program at HCC?
The emphasis is on building construction, not hobby woodworking.
5. Do you offer training in cabinetry or making furniture?
No. During the last semester of the program, the class does learn finishing which can be applied to that specialty area, but there is no emphasis on constructing cabinetry and furniture.
6. Besides construction, what other kinds of employment would I be able to get after completing a carpentry degree at HCC?
Building maintenance, construction material supplies.
7. Are there any evening classes?
No. All carpentry classes are offered during the day.
8. What kind of degree can I get after I complete the program?
You can earn either a Certificate of Achievement or an Associate of Applied Science degree.
9. What is the difference between a Certificate and an Associate degree?
The difference is the number of credits required for each. The Associate degree requires an additional English class and two general education classes for a total of 9 additional credits.
10. How long will it take for me to earn an Associate degree?
It will take two years.
11. Will I be able to finish the Certificate in a shorter time since I will be taking less credits?
No. It will still take two years. Carpentry classes cannot be combined. They must be taken in the order it is offered because the classes are progressive and build on the prior semester classes.
12. Can I get a Certificate of Achievement and then later come back to get my Associate in Applied Science degree?
Yes. Many students get their Certificate, go to work for a few years and then return to complete the additional credits to earn their Associate degree.
13. Do my credits expire after a specified number of years?
No. Your credits never expire but the program requirements may change over the years so if you return later, you may be required to meet the new requirements.
14. What kind of tools will I need to buy for the program?
Your instructor will give you a tool list when you start. The approximate cost which includes books is about $600 for the two years.
