ED 170 - Introduction to Working with Infants and Toddlers
Course Description
- Prerequisite or Corequisite: ENG 22/60 OR placement in ENG 100
Provides an overview of the basic skills needed for working with infants and toddlers their families in group care settings. The course focuses on the pivotal role of the family in supporting each child’s individual development and includes strategies for promoting strong relationships between caregivers and families. Knowledge of development of very young children, infant-toddler caregiving routines, caregiver practices that enrich experiences, and caregiver roles are emphasized. May be taken on a CR/N basis.
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of ED 170, the student will be able to:
- Describe basic developmental characteristics and sequences in children from birth to 36 months.
- Identify practices that promote safe and healthy environments for children.
- Practice caregiving routines that support positive outcomes for children.
- Use materials, activities, and environments to advance skills in children from birth to 36 months.
- Practice child guidance techniques that build self-esteem and independence.
- Practice communication skills that build supportive relationships with families.
