Early Childhood Program & the University of Hawaii System
Honolulu Community College's Early Childhood Program is part of the University of Hawaii system. Early childhood programs throughout the UH system are guided by this 1990 mission statement:
The Mission of the University of Hawaii System with regard to Early Childhood Education is twofold:
- To provide training and education programs for the devolopment of competent and nurturing caregivers and teachers of Hawaii's young children.
- To provide quality child care services for students, faculty and staff in the University of Hawaii system. These services will represent the best of current practices and will serve as a practicum for programs related to early childhook education as well as providing demonstration of quality care for the larger community.
The Philosophy and Practices of the HCC Early Childhood Program
Honolulu Community College's early childhood program is guided by a philosophy which emphasizes reflection on values and self-examination.
The members of the early childhood community of Honolulu Commiunity College share a set of core values and are engaged in an ongoing process of examining our practices in oru work with children, adult students and the community to be consistent with those values.
The content of the HCC early childhood courses for students and programs for children are based upon child development research and standards of best practice as outlined by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).
