AJ 221 - Introduction to Criminal Law

  • Prerequisite or Corequisite: AJ 101

The history and philosophy of criminal law are examined along with definitions and classifications of crimes. This course also covers the basics of legal research and the application of the concept of law as a social force.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of AJ 221, the student will be able to:

  • Explain the major historical steps leading to the development of U.S. criminal law patterns.
    • Define types of criminal law.
  • Define the role of prosecution and defense in the adjudication of a criminal matter.
  • Explain the elements, conduct, results of conduct, and attendant circumstances of certain crimes in the Hawaii Statutes.
  • Explain the sources of development in the case law of significant criminal law matters.
