AJ 235 - Ethics in the Criminal Justice System

  • Prerequisite or Corequisite: AJ 101

An identification and analysis of the diverse ethical issues encountered in the Criminal Justice System. Traditional ethical theories will be examined and applied to such topics as discretion, plea bargaining, bail, wiretapping, privacy, punishment, and prisoners’ rights.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of AJ 235, the student will be able to:

  • Define the vocabulary of ethics, i.e., morals, ethics, values, dilemmas.
  • Describe major ethical systems.
  • Discuss major ethical theories and issues.
  • Explain the relationship between justice and law.
  • Explain the role of law enforcement in a democracy.
  • Describe the issues involved in graft, gratuities, deception, excessive force, and loyalty.
  • List issues in ethics with regard to the courts and corrections.
