Program Description

The Automotive Technology (AMT) program at HCC is a comprehensive five-semester program master certified by the National Automotive Technology Education Foundation (NATEF) that prepares students for employment as automotive technicians. Students completing the program may earn a Certificate of Achievement after one semester or an Associate in Applied Science degree upon program completion. The program has maintained its NATEF certification since 1993, undergoing a review every five years. It is certified in all eight ASE areas: engine repair, automotive transmission and transaxle, manual drive train and axles, suspension and steering, brakes, electrical/electronics systems, heating and air conditioning, and engine performance.

Program Mission

The Automotive Technology program's mission is to serve the community as a learning-centered,
open door program that provides technical training to meet the demands of the automotive industry and the needs of the individual. An open-exit option allows the students to identify their career objectives and participate in program exploration.

Awards

In 1995 the program won the second place award from the Industry Planning Council (American Automobile Manufacturers Association, American Vocational Association, NATEF) for post-secondary automotive training programs. Colleges from all across the United States competed for the award.

In 1996 the program received the Outstanding Postsecondary Vocational Education Award in the State of Hawaii

Scholarships

The program has a number of scholarships available for students once they have completed one semester of the program. Scholarships are generally awarded based on your grades, attitude, and ability to work as a member of a team. The following scholarships are currently available:

  • Chrysler Apprentice Program (CAP)
  • Hawaii Automobile Dealers Association (HADA)
  • Industry Planning Council (IPC)
  • Nissan Motor Corporation
  • Bridgestone/Firestone
  • Toyota Technical Education Program (T-TEP)

Generally such scholarships provide for books, tuition, and fees. In some instances scholarships also provide a tool allowance. Some scholarships also provide employment opportunities while you are a student.

Cooperative Education Program

The Program will provide students with the opportunity to acquire on the job experience related to classroom and laboratory instruction to enhance the students’ learning and development in the Automotive Technology. Job placement opportunities are available at:

  • Dealership Repair Facilities
  • Independent Repair Facilities
  • Rent-a-Car Fleet Repair Facilities
  • Military Motor Pool Repair Facilities
  • Utility Fleet Repair Facilities

Facilities

The program is housed in modern well-equipped facilities which occupy over 50,000 square feet of training space. The program takes great pride in providing training using late-model vehicles and state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment.
