AVIT 104 - Aviation History

  • Prerequisite or Corequisite: AVIT 102
  • AVIT majors only.

This course will cover the history of aviation from its very beginnings through the space program. It will be a composite of lecture and videos and will also require written research papers.

Upon successful completion of AVIT 104, the student will be able to:

  • Understand and appreciate aviation history and sacrifices of aviation pioneers
  • Be aware of the impact of history on the progression of flight
  • Recognize the contribution and involvement of Hawaii to aviation history

Picture of the Space Shuttle LaunchThis course explores the history of flight from concepts and experimentation, to the beginnings of flight, early industry growth, modern jet powered flight through space exploration identifying events and aviation pioneers that advanced aviation. The unique importance and role of aviation and the aviation pioneers and advocates of Hawaii are highlighted.

For AVIT majors, a first semester enrollment in AVIT 104, Aviation History is suggested. No flight lessons are associated with this course. Academic instruction for Aviation History is conducted at Hangar 111, Kalaeloa Airport, in Kapolei, Oahu, Hawaii, unless specified at enrollment.

Student Learning Outcomes

This course objective is to provide the student with an introduction and appreciation for aviation history, identifying events and the pioneers that impacted and guided the development of aviation and flight. Awareness and understanding the struggles, challenges, and success of the genesis and evolution of flight through space travel emphasizes advances associated with aviation history. Students can appreciate their future flight opportunities is a result of the sacrifices made by aviation's early pioneers.

  • Demonstrate knowledge and appreciation for the history of aviation
  • Identify events and the pioneers that impacted the development of aviation and flight
  • Be aware of the contribution to aviation that has occurred in Hawaii
  • Conduct research into an event in aviation or historical personality

Evaluation Standards

The student’s knowledge and understanding of aviation history will be evaluated through classroom discussion, reports, presentations, examinations and other assignments deemed appropriate by the instructor.  A passing grade of 70% on all course material is required.
