CA 122 - Copy Preparation
Course Description
- CA majors only
Copy Preparation focuses on preparing
text for print production using appropriate programs
in combination with applicable hardware. Emphasis
on skill development in typesetting to include
understanding type fundamentals, fonts, character
recognition and its uses as well as typographic
imaging or special effects.
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of CA 122, the student will be able to:

- x-height
- mean-line
- base-line
- ascenders
- descenders
- caps
- lowercase
- uppercase
- small caps
- ligatures
- dingbats
- bullets
- rules
- symbols
- display and body type
- weight" and "posture"
- serif and sans serif
- letter spacing and kerning
- word spacing
- paragraph spacing
- line spacing
- measurement principles for leading
- Measure copy and text.
- Demonstrate copy fitting.
- Select the appropriate word processing software.
- Prepare text for exporting.
- Proof and mark-up copy.
- Make necessary corrections using basic proofreading marks.
- Describe differences between true type and postscript fonts.
- Distinguish among type 1, type 2, and multiple master fonts.
- Download fonts.
- Use OCR character recognition software to capture text.
- Discuss typographic imaging.
- Produce curved or special effects type using a graphics application.
