CENT 140 - Computer Networking I

  • Prerequisite: CENT 130

This course introduces the OSI and TCP/IP models, industry standards, commonly used network topologies, IP addressing using subnet masks, basic network copper cabling, routing concepts, distance vector and link state routing protocols, and the configuration and use of routers.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of CENT 140, the student will be able to:

  • Name and describe the functions performed at each layer of the OSI and TCP/IP reference models.
  • Identity industry standards related to network cabling.
  • Perform IP addressing and subnetting.
  • Construct network cables.
  • Explain the purpose of network layer protocols such as the Internet Protocol.
  • Describe the purpose of routing protocols.
  • Describe and configure static routing.
  • Describe and identity commonly used distance vector routing protocols, such as RIP and EIGRP.
  • Describe link state routing protocols, and identity commonly used link state routing protocols including OSPF and IS-IS.
  • Perform router configuration, including basic configuration, configuration of ethernet and serial interfaces, distance vector and link state routing protocols such as RIP, EIGRP, and OSPF.
