COSM 21L - Elementary Cosmetology Lab

  • Prerequisite: High School diploma or equivalent; ENG 20B & C & D & E OR ESL 11 & 13 & 14 & 17 OR placement in ENG 21/60; MATH 20B & C & D OR placement in MATH 24/50/53
  • Corequisite: COSM 20 and SP 50
  • COSM majors only

A basic foundation of practical skills in shampooing, hair cutting, styling, hair coloring, permanent waving, manicuring, facials and scalp treatments.

Contact: 30 hours lab. minimum per week

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of COSM 21L, the student will be able to:

  • Draping
  • Demonstrate the draping of patrons for the following purposes:
    • non-chemical services
    • chemical services
    • sanitation
    • comfort
    • protection

Shampooing and Rinsing

  • Use the following shampooing techniques:
    • manipulating the scalp for cleansing
    • massaging the scalp for relaxation
  • Use proper cape position and head-dress to avoid water on the floor.
  • Comply with all safety procedures.
  • Follow all infection control guidelines.
  • Hairshaping
  • Palm the shears in preparation for combing the hair during a cut.
  • Remove hair lengths with various tools.
  • Follow a systematic procedure in cutting hair.
  • Cross-check and texturize.
  • Handle hair-cutting implements properly.
  • Define uses of each implement.
  • Cut the following forms:
    • solid
    • graduated
    • layered
  • Use proper terminology when discussing haircuts for clients.
  • Comply with all safety and sanitation procedures.
  • Follow all infection control guidelines.

Scalp and Hair Care

  • Define the following terms:
    • hair structure
    • hair growth
    • hair condition
  • Identify applicable scalp massage techniques.
  • Brush hair scientifically as part of a scalp treatment.
  • Demonstrate the proper application of scalp treatment products.
  • Define the various massage movements and their functions in scalp massage.
  • Conduct services in a safe environment.
  • Follow all infection control guidelines.

Chemical Hair Relaxing

  • Identify different types of relaxers.
  • Identify proper applications based on hair analysis.
  • Demonstrate proper application of a hair relaxing product.
  • Practice all special safety conditions.
  • Practice infection control and safety procedures.

Hair Styling

  • Analyze key areas to create and support the client's total image.
  • Identify different shapes of faces and suitable styles for each.
  • Apply design elements and principles to compose designs.
  • Practice the following techniques to achieve a particular style:
    • molding
    • scaling
    • application of rollers
    • application of pincurls
    • practice infection control and safety procedures.

Facials

  • Define the function", composition, and types of skin.
  • Recognize the difference between a disorder and a disease.
  • Identify proper facial products for use on a client.
  • Demonstrate the basic steps during a facial," including cleansing and massage.
  • Practice infection control and safety procedures.

Make-Up

  • Recognize the basic steps for applying make-up.
  • Show the proper use of contouring make-up.
  • Define the various steps when giving a make-up application.
  • Practice infection control and safety procedures.

Thermal Styling

  • Use proper blow-drying techniques.
  • Handle thermal styling tools safely.
  • Practice infection control and safety procedures.

Manicure

  • Perform a proper manicure.
  • Apply polish to each nail.
  • Demonstrate the proper use of manicure implements.
  • Follow set procedures for manicures.
  • Massage the hands and forearms from insertion to origin.
  • Practice infection control and safety procedures.

Pedicuring

  • Perform a proper pedicure.
  • Apply polish to each nail.
  • Demonstrate the proper use of pedicure implements.
  • Follow set procedures for pedicures.
  • Massage the leg below the knee from insertion to origin.
  • Practice infection control and safety procedures.

Fingerwave

  • Control wet hair into a fingerwave pattern ending in pincurls.
  • Practice infection control and safety procedures.

Hair Coloring

  • Mix color products and bleaching agents.
  • Apply color products and bleaching agents.
  • Classify colors.
  • Apply a virgin tint going lighter.
  • Apply a retouch.
  • Describe the color wheel.
  • Use color charts.
  • Apply different bleaches to hair swathes.
  • Identify the contributing pigment for each level.
  • Practice personal and client safety procedures.

Eyebrow Arching

  • Perform required steps for a professional salon eyebrow arch.
  • Follow all safety precautions.
  • Describe the procedures for temporary and permanent hair removal.
  • Practice infection control and safety procedures.

Waxing

  • Handle hot or cold wax properly.
  • Observe all safety practices for client and operator protection.
