DISL 48 - International Diesel Engines

Course Description

  • Prerequisite: DISL 40
  • DISL majors only

Instruction will center around the disassembly and reassembly of a complete International diesel engine following shop manual procedures. Completion of this course will provide a hands-on understanding of the internal components of a International diesel engine.

Student Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of DISL 48, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate safe work habits
  • Locate and record serial and model numbers from the engine
  • Demonstrate use of the engine service manual by locating specific information on R&R components, model numbers, operating specifications, torque chart values, and system schematics
  • Disassemble engine in a organized, clean and safe manner
  • Perform component inspections and measurements and compare with specification in engine service manual for component reusability
  • Assemble engine in an organized clean, and safe manner
  • Demonstrate how to set fuel injection pump timing
  • Label the components and their functions on each system's schematic
  • Point out the flow through each system on the engine
  • List and perform engine tune-up procedures
  • Explain the four stroke cycle engine operating principles
  • Dyno test a selected 'diesel engine
