ED 131 - Early Childhood Development: Theory Into Practice

Course Description

  • Prerequisite or Corequisite: ENG 22/60 OR placement in ENG 100

Covers principles of human development from conception through early childhood. Focuses on the interrelation of physical, cognitive, emotional and social aspects of the individual during this period and how this information about development affects one’s expectations and relationship to the individual child. May be taken on a CR/N basis.

  • Describe methods used to study child development.
  • Identify the major child development theorists.
  • Describe the contributions of major theorists in the field.
  • Outline how these theories have influenced practices in group settings.
  • Identify major factors influencing prenatal development.
  • Describe key developmental characteristics and tasks of each stage of early development.
  • Make reasonable interpretations of child behavior based on observations.
  • Explain the significance of major developmental tasks and issues.
  • Describe adult behaviors that facilitate development.
