ED 140 - Guilding Young Children in Group Settings
Course Description
- Prerequisite: "C" or higher in ED 131
- Prerequisite or Corequisite: ENG 22/60 OR placement in ENG 100
Addresses positive ways to support children’s social-emotional development. Focuses on adult-child and child-child interactions and relationships. May be taken on a CR/N basis.
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of ED 140, the student will be able to:
- Explain the cornerstone of quality early education and care.
- Describe guidance and management strategies appropriate to the needs of children.
- Analyze the appropriateness of these strategies for individual needs.
- Describe supportive ways of communicating with children and their families.
- Communicate with children and their families in ways that respect diversity.
- Explain how to nurture positive relationships with children and their families.
- Discuss the importance of
- supporting each child's strengths and weaknesses,
- responding in an accepting manner,
- affirming each child's individual identity,
- maintaining a nurturing emotional climate,
- speaking to children frequently, and
- working with families to enhance understanding.
- Recognize differences in behavior and their influences.
- Select guidance practices that support children in building
- appropriate trust and independence,
- inner controls and self-motivation,
- positive self concept,
- prosocial behavior, and
- positive relationships and interactions.
- Demonstrate the disposition to
- use respectful and positive guidance practices,
