FIRE 103 - Medical Emergency First Responder

Course Description

  • Prerequisite: ENG 22/60 OR placement in ENG 100

This course is designed to teach first responders basic life support skills and procedures in the prehospital emergency setting. May be taken on a CR/N basis.

  • Demonstrate CPR
  • Describe Repertory Emergencies
  • Explain Cardiopulmonary Physiology
  • Describe the oxygen equipment and manual ventilation
  • Discuss Trauma
  • Recognize burns, hemorrhage, lacerations, and puncture wounds
  • Identify Fractures
  • Demonstrate bandaging and splinting
  • Discuss Automobile Extrication
  • Explain Automobile Extrication
  • Recognize behavioral disorders, a stroke, epilepsy, and drug overdose
  • Describe Head/ Brain/ Spinal cord injuries
  • Demonstrate Spineboard use
  • Explain Ocean Extrication for Spinal Injury
  • Discuss SCUBA Diving Emergencies and Emergency Childbirth
  • Explain the Integration with the EMSS Concept, 911, EMT/ MICT, and Ambulance backup
  • Describe helicopter direct water extrication and new improved medical kit materials
