SOSE 145 - Group Counseling
- Recommended Prep: ENG 22/60 OR placement in ENG 100
Issues and methods in the use of small groups to promote personal growth, therapeutic interaction, and social change. Group formation, maintenance, and termination, group dynamics; and roles/skills appropriate to group leadership and membership. May be taken on a CR/N basis.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of SOSE 145, the student will be able to:
- Identify the various types of groups, explain their purposes, and give examples for each type of group.
- Demonstrate knowledge on the characteristerics of of each stage of group development.
- Describe the challenges and issues of each stage of group development.
- Explain the role of the group leader or group facilitator.
- Identify and discuss group leadership skills.
- Give examples of internal group dynamics which influence the group process.
- Give examples of external group dynamics which influence the group process.
- Discuss at three advantages and three limitations of group counseling.
- List the uses and misuses of group techniques.
- Explain ethical issues in group membership.
- Demonstrate knowledge in working with specific populations (e.g. adolescents).
- Conduct a mock initial, middle, and/or termination group meeting in class.
- Use group exercises and/or develop own group exercises to use in groups.
- Write a proposal for a therapeutic group.
- Attend a group meeting in the community group session/meeting and give an oral observation report on the group process.
