Focuses on developing basic individual counseling and problem-solving skills, potential and limitations of paraprofessionals in counseling.

- Describe desirable characteristics of helpers.
- Describe the potential and limitations of para-professional counseling.
- Describe the themes related to common counseling topics.
- Describe the process of helper introspection.
- Describe the Stages of Change and Motivational Interviewing.
- Identify helping tools.
- Describe how to start and end a helping session.
- Identify the process of assessment and use of contracting.
- Describe the problem solving process given case situations.
- Apply the helping process in videotaped mock counseling sessions and personal logs.
- Give verbal and written critiques of individual and group counseling techniques.
- Demonstrate ethical principles related to counseling.
