FAMR 133 - Dynamics of Family Violence

Course Description

  • Recommended Prep: ENG 22/60 OR placement in ENG 100

Overview of family violence which includes physical and sexual abuse of children, spousal assault, violence between siblings, abuse of the disabled, physical abuse and neglect as well as financial abuse of the elderly. Cultural/political trends to "criminalize" family violence.

Upon successful completion of FAMR 133, the student will be able to:

  • Analyze difficulties in defining and measuring the problem.
  • Recognize the dynamics involved in abusive relationships.
  • Identify the major models and theories of family violence.
  • Distinguish conventional myths from research-based knowledge about family violence.
  • Describe the forms of child, partner, and elder abuse.
  • Recognize characteristics of abusers and victims.
  • Recognize the extent of abuse and neglect in the community.
  • Describe intervention strategies.
  • Identify prevention and treatment resources in the community.
  • Discuss the consequences of violence within relationships.
  • Review current criminal justice trends regarding domestic violence.
  • Analyze the social forces affecting traditional police/court responses.
  • Examine abuse within institutional care-giving settings.
