SOSE 21 - Family Dynamics & the Social Work Interview

Course Description

Provides an introductory overview of social work and the roles of paraprofessionals. Focuses on understanding family dynamics and on developing basic social work interviewing skills.

Upon successful completion of SOSE 21, the student will be able to:

  • Discuss fields of practice.
  • Identify various paraprofessionals in the human service field and their purposes.
  • Describe the concept of family dynamics.
  • List ways a family can influence a person's self-esteem.
  • Describe patterns of communication within families.
  • Give examples of family rules.
  • Differentiate characteristics of nurturing and troubled families.
  • Describe ways families can become more nurturing.
  • Identify social work values and principles.
  • Explain how social work values and principles guide practices in the field.
  • Describe elements of a social work interview.
  • Interview clients in role-play and/or actual case situations.
