SOSE 55 - Individual Counseling

Course Description

Focuses on developing basic individual counseling and problem-solving skills, potential and limitations of paraprofessionals in counseling.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of SOSE 55, the student will be able to:

  • Describe the helping process model.
  • Describe desirable characteristics of helpers.
  • Describe the potential and limitations of para-professional counseling.
  • Describe the themes related to common counseling topics.
  • Describe the process of helper introspection.
  • Describe the Stages of Change and Motivational Interviewing.
  • Identify helping tools.
  • Describe how to start and end a helping session.
  • Identify the process of assessment and use of contracting.
  • Describe the problem solving process given case situations.
  • Apply the helping process in videotaped mock counseling sessions and personal logs.
  • Give verbal and written critiques of individual and group counseling techniques.
  • Demonstrate ethical principles related to counseling.
