MARR 52 - Marine Electrical Systems

Course Description

  • Prerequisite: PHYS 56

Builds on the theory and practice learned in Physics 56, Fundamentals of Electricity. The emphasis is on DC systems. Troubleshooting a boats electrical system with a multi-meter will be practiced. Electrical installations per American Boat and Yacht Council standards will be emphasized.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Review basic dc and ac theory
  • Review electrical safety rules and regulations
  • Practice checking polarity of ac shore power
  • Practice use and maintenance of marine electrical tools and instruments
  • Practice practical application of trouble-shooting theory
  • Practice installation of components in a ship's dc system ( including coaxial connections, vhf radio, transducer and knot meter)
  • Practice marine battery installation
  • Practice marine battery charger inspection
  • State advantages of an inverter and diagram installation
  • Practice trouble shooting marine alternators
  • Practice trouble shooting basic gen-set systems
  • Review corrosion as it relates to metals in the marine environment
