OESM 104 - Occupational-Related Diseases

Course Description

  • Recommended Prep: ENG 22/60 OR placement in ENG 100

Basic information on major occupational diseases, how toxic materials and harmful physical agents affect the body, and methods of prevention. The course will cover required occupational health program and other related laws and regulations. Required for OESM majors.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students are expected to be able to:

  • Explain epidemiological study methods
  • Identify advantages and disadvantages of certain epidemiological study designs
  • Calculate various rates used to measure workplace injuries and illnesses
  • Interpret data on frequency and distribution of occupational diseases
  • Discuss relevant human anatomy and physiology topics
  • Discuss relevant toxicological topics
  • Define/classify chemical & physical agents based on their adverse health effects
  • Identify specific hazards causing major occupational diseases in USA
  • Describe common symptoms of major occupational diseases
  • Explain etiology of diseases and the body's defense mechanisms
  • Describe control methods to prevent workers' overexposure
  • Discuss effective medical surveillance methods
  • Analyze a given scenario to determine causes and controls of work-related illnesses
  • Discuss relevant HIOSH regulations
  • Apply HIOSH regulations to a given scenario
  • Design an epidemiological study based on a given scenario
